This is exactly what I needed to read. I wrote an essay about Annabelle Chong way back in the 90s and compared her to JenniCam…but maybe I was wrong and Chong had that divide that the development of her character created. Phillips is more like JenniCam in that the parasocial demands just got more and more…I also talked a whole lot about the lesbian phallus and gangbangs…but that was because it was the 90s and queer theory classes were like that back then. Anyhow: THANK YOU. This is my favourite newsletter for a reason.
Thanks!! In the Vice interview Grace talks about Anabelle being a persona she can still step into for confidence. I definitely recommend checking out the interviews/profiles!
i have always been conflicted on my opinions on porn because i do understand the arguments on both sides. but when i saw the outrage made because of grace phillips really made me question where we are as a generation when it comes to taking about sex. people were quote tweeting about soul ties and how bad porn is for society and i was so confused how that was the take away they had.
that was exactly the response that made me write this! like this doesn’t say anything about society or real sex or “soul ties” it only tells us the creator-led porn industry isn’t very different from the regular porn industry
EXACTLY similarly to the traditional porn industry it’s about what will bring in the most viewers whether that be who buys the porn tape or who will see a promotional tweet and subscribe to their onlyfans. it’s about driving engagement in whatever way possible.
also you’re point about how one of the big draws to onlyfans is how authentic it feels, how it is filmed by women themselves and even filmed from their bedrooms. i think this has a link to how a lot of media is being made nowadays. like how instead of celebrities promoting brands we have influencers who build a platform right from their bedrooms doing brand deals with million dollar companies. or how more musicians are starting their careers from their bedrooms with their laptops and a dream. normal people can access fame in a way that has never been seen before and its consequences are being seen everywhere even in the porn industry. honestly i loved this article and its given me a lot to think about.
Hey I just want to say this was such an enthralling read. I have nothing to contribute to the conversation, but I know you must’ve put a lot of time into researching this and it shows!
i wanted someone to write about this so bad!! you did an amazing amazing job at articulating everything i had lodged in my brain, itching to pop out. amazing work. x
